The Right Accessories
“The saying dictates that a bride should have something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue in her possession in order to be safe and lucky on her wedding day. In honor of this superstition, many brides have used accessories to fill these slots- perhaps Grandma’s pearl earrings, a dainty new handkerchief from the maid of honor, a sky-blue garter, and a best girlfriend’s charm bracelet. On African shores, the requisite accessories were somewhat different- a bride’s earring in the groom’s ear, an elaborate necklace for brides only, an embroidered ceremonial shawl.”
This passage was taken from one of Harriette Cole’s books on planning weddings, Jumping the Broom.
